"You will find that Lisa Brognano's voice is intimate and clear, and her words are kind. She chooses subject matter with care. Each poem is gentle but insistent, inviting us into the narrative, to be part of small, important stories. Brognano's primary goal is to be honest, revelatory, while remaining friendly. Not that she pulls her punches. Even when the topic leans towards the painful, the perilous, Brognano is fully aware of the risk. Her deft touch keeps things real and she never stops wielding her heart as the chief tool with which she crafts." - Garrison Somers, Editor-in-Chief, The Blotter Magazine "Lisa Brognano's poems in The Copper Weathervane are doorways to life's small wonders. Old men roast under the sun. Swimmers race through the water. A woman gazes at the night sky. These poems are clear-eyed and entertaining vignettes that help us better grasp our relationships with nature and humanity." - Benjamin Woodard, Atlas and Alice Literary MagazineLisa Brognano's poems separate the feminine from masculine, explore what we lose when we exchange the music of songbirds and crickets for modern life, and asks us to remember the wolves on the perimeters. Amongst these themes, we are introduced to a cast of characters-captain, farmer, Korean War vet, violinist, to a pair of childhood friends. Romance also abounds in this poetry collection from a suitor who questions his leap to commit, to the rekindling of long-lasting love, to the exchange of lust that unknowingly takes us to different places. Can we harness time? Believe there is an art to war? Watch the sky for direction? Brognano presses us to answer. "Violin Girl" instructs to play for others while we continue to consult with the wiser, older woman in "Returning a Dollar." Like the Potawatomi who honored the Four Directions, the East for illumination, the South for vigor, the West for contemplation, and the North for survival, Brognano perfectly titles her second collection. - Christine Redman-Waldeyer, author of Frame by Frame

Would you like a couch with that painting? Obscurity is a way of life for Gavin Vonn Getch, a painter who works at a frame shop in a small New England town. His life changes when billionaire Gary Eastman enters his shop and becomes the ultimate patron: a lifetime commission for all his work in exchange for a crap-load of money. Some of his artist buddies envy him and others think he's sold out. Curious as to where his paintings are being displayed, he makes a trip to the DLC headquarters, where a shocking discovery forces him to reevaluate his deal with Eastman and his identity as an artist. Why does an artist create? What alternatives are there to completely selling out? Is there no genius - only marketing? The book is a satirical and sometimes surreal look at the art world. The book is read by the author, along with 40 different voice actors for each of the different characters. This is not a radio drama, there are no annoying sound effects or distracting background ambiance. The dialogue in the animated book trailer was created from this audiobook. Note: This is an unofficial summary and analysis of The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. This summary and analysis is not endorsed by or affiliated with Margaret Atwood. Here's a free excerpt from the book: The narrator of the book is an unnamed woman throughout the length of the novel. In the start of the book, the narrator is kept inside a high school's gymnasium (The Rachel and Leah Center, informally known as The Red Center) and several other females are also there. Aunt Elizabeth and Aunt Sara serve as guards and discipline them. While these two utilize cattle prods to intimidate, other guards possess guns. The women have to stay in the gym except for the walks they are allowed to take twice a day. The school's field is shielded by barbed wire and male guards known as Angels. The women are forbidden from talking among themselves and exchange names via lip-reading. Subsequently, the narrator is inside a room that is white and scarcely furnished. The room does not contain anything that can be utilized as a weapon. As she hears a bell, the narrator changes into red attire engulfing her entire frame. A shade covers her face. She descends the stairs with her shopping basket. The narrator enters the kitchen and receives some tokens from Rita, the cook. Rita is a 'Martha' and dressed in green. The name of the cleaner is Cora. The narrator wants to have conversations with the two like they do with each other but the Marthas are not supposed to have conversations with her kind. She remembers Luke. Rita orders the narrator to go to the market. If you want to know more, download and start listening now - even if it's 3 a.m.! Revision with unchanged content. This book is based on two case studies of micro-finance systems recorded in the Philippines in 2003. The first case describes conflicts between traditional economic modes and market based agricultural production of an indigenous community (Kankana-ey Bago people) in the Northern Philippines. The second case looks at the dynamics of an informal market economy by analysing a vegetable dealers' savings and loans cooperative in Manila. In both cases a fundamental theoretical question is asked: What happens if several contradictory social systems influence one group of actors? The theoretical frame is based on Giddens' Theory of structuration and concepts of exchange and compliance borrowed from the Governance debate. Giddens' notion of recursivity describes the enabling and constraining relationship between social structures and individual action. Both cases illustrate how individuals are embedded in social structures - markets and communities - and in turn reproduce these structures through individual action. The key finding of the study is that conflicts between social systems recursively create conflicts within the agency of individuals.
